Take an inspiring journey to three different neighbourhoods where visionaries have used art to unify and beautify the community and combat social problems. This tour gives you an opportunity to see some of the coolest community art projects and interact with residents whose lives have been changed thanks to the dreams of their artist neighbours. Be sure to bring your camera to capture these unique urban masterpieces!
Barber’s Alley, a community project started by Papito el Peluquero, a barber whose dreams were to transform the “ugliest street in Havana” and to provide job opportunities to underprivileged youths in his community. His success is evident in a street that now bustles with art and private businesses, and his hairdressing school that has trained many a young Cuban to make a living in the trade. The success of his project even caught the attention of Obama, whom he met during his 2016 visit to Cuba.
Fusterlandia, in the fishing village of Jaimanitas, was the vision of artist Jose Fuster, “the Picasso of Cuba”. A successful international artist, he returned to his home with the vision of turning his house into a mosaic homage to Spanish architect Gaudi. His whimsical murals and generosity to his community inspired others to expand his work throughout the neighbourhood, where you can now see brightly coloured mosaics adorning houses and public spaces.
Muraleando is a neighbourhood cultural program in Lawton promoted by a group of local artists directed by Manuel Mario Diaz Baldrich to provide different workshops and activities for children, teenagers, and the elderly including music, dancing, theater, painting, ceramics, and sculpture work out of recycled materials. The creativity born of these classes manifested in murals and found object art throughout the neighborhood. Here is where we’ll be treated to a special lunch and music performance by some of the neighborhood’s talented residents.
This is a great opportunity to make a donation if you’d like to bring art supplies (pens, pencils, paints, brushes, etc).
